Seeking medical treatment in the north is common in Shenzhen and Hong Kong funded private hospitals: the age range of Hong Kong patients is constantly expanding

Hong Kong funded New Feng United Family Hospital has treated 17000 Hong Kong patients in its 3 years of operation.

It is becoming increasingly common for Hong Kong people to seek medical treatment in the north. A Hong Kong funded private hospital in Shenzhen has stated that the number of patients in Hong Kong has increased significantly in recent years, with half of the cancer patients being from Hong Kong. Plans such as elderly medical vouchers have also helped to boost hospital demand. In response to the rapid development of Hong Kong business, the hospital has strengthened its understanding of the needs of Hong Kong people and introduced measures to support them. It is also expected that the proportion of Hong Kong people will continue to increase in the future.

After Hong Kong resumed full customs clearance with the mainland in 2023, the trend of Hong Kong people seeking medical treatment in the north has rapidly increased. The Hong Kong funded New Feng United Family Hospital, located in Futian District, Shenzhen, about a 10 minute drive from Futian Port, has treated 17000 Hong Kong patients since its opening three years ago. Among them, the number of Hong Kong patients treated in outpatient clinics last month has tripled year-on-year. Currently, half of the cancer patients in the hospital are Hong Kong people, aged between 40 and 80, with up to 80% of oncology patients seeking medical treatment being Hong Kong people. The hospital is also one of the designated medical institutions of the Elderly Medical Voucher Dawan District Pilot Program. Since August last year, nearly 5000 elderly patients have visited the hospital, mainly focusing on preventive examinations and chronic disease management, such as eye examinations, hypertension or diabetes follow-up.

Xiao Yihuang, the management organization of the hospital and the executive director of New Wind Tianyu, the Chief Operating Officer of Greater Bay Area, described that the hospital's Hong Kong business is developing rapidly, and the team has also spent a lot of time understanding the needs and cooperation of Hong Kong people, such as adding new facilities WhatsApp Provide a hotline for inquiries, offer shuttle buses to Futian Port, and accept credit card payments. He said that the specialized examination items under the medical voucher scheme have lower fees, and many elderly people know that these items are more expensive in Hong Kong, so they sincerely go to the hospital for examination. He also pointed out that the age group of patients in Hong Kong is constantly expanding, from grassroots people aged 50 to 60, gradually expanding to middle-class elderly people, and recently to people aged 30 to 40.

Public healthcare reform in Hong Kong may increase Hong Kong residents' visits to mainland China for medical examinations
Pan Dongping, the medical director of New Frontier Medical Group (Greater Bay Area), who is a specialist in liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic surgery, pointed out that in recent years, Hong Kong people's acceptance of mainland doctors has increased. However, due to the different medical systems in the two places, patients need time to explore. He also said that under the reform of public medical fees in Hong Kong, many services will be increased, which has attracted a group of more grassroots citizens to go to Shenzhen for examination. "Returning to the mainland for a few thousand mosquitoes is better than (public hospitals) for 500 yuan, but it has to be scheduled." At the same time, many companies in mainland China have allocated resources to drug development in recent years, which also helps Hong Kong people strengthen their confidence in mainland medical care.

In addition, the government launched the "Shenzhen Pilot Program for Dental Services" at the beginning of the year, arranging about 2000 civil servants to receive dental images at New Feng United Family Hospital X Light examination and dental cleaning services. Xiao Yihuang pointed out that dental appointments were already fully booked in the first two months of the plan, describing their popularity as beyond imagination and the effectiveness of the plan as good. The hospital also attracted some participants to undergo physical examinations and gastrointestinal endoscopy. Looking ahead, Xiao Yihuang pointed out that the medical burden on Hong Kong people is heavier than that on the mainland, and he believes that the proportion of Hong Kong people will continue to increase. He hopes that in three years, the proportion of patients from Hong Kong and mainland China will increase to half and half respectively.
